What's your favorite Ken Rockwell photo?
>>4486058Ken's an icon in the hobby, one of the internet OG's for photography. His website is still great as a technical resource, but he's always been shit on for his editing style, and growing family. Mythic meme tier now, like Bob Ross, or fit's Scooby. Here's some of his last few years of stuff. His modern stuff is still quite saturated, but I feel like really suffers from over sharpening. He also makes use of perspective correction / keystone adjustments very often.
The king of smartphone photography.OversharpeningOversaturationHighlight slider to -100Shadow slider to +100The ultimate Ken preset
I dont even think he's that bad. His photos are over saturated sure but thats just his thing
I hate his style but it's definitely his own. Lmao this thread.
>>4486395The Roy's sign photo is unironically really good. His oversaturation style can work, but the issue is that he just uses it for literally everything.
I want to share a small project I have been working on for the last few weeks. It is a self-portrait mini-series called "Authentic Sinner," inspired by the fresco of Giotto called Virtues and Vices. I tried to find the five vices that represented me the most, although I am also trying to respond to society's vices as a whole, as well as the representation of the vices in the history of art. This is obviously an ambitious project for a first-time series and was not executed professionally, but I learned a lot about executing a concept in the process... I was a bit camera shy at first but learned to perform, direct myself, and shoot with a self-timer. The outcome could have been better, upon reflection, but I am happy that I tried my hand at a creative project. Please be as honest in your critiques as possible. I was told to work more on my angles, try to make the still life less flat by pivoting the camera more, to use dutch angles, finding better backdrops, as well as learn how to arrange a still life (mine is lacklustre). I will retake the final self-portrait (Infidelitas) because it isn't how I want it, but the prototype is good enough to show how I want it to be presented, as a (cross-shaped) polyptych.Self portraiture is a really fascinating genre and I hope anons try to take it up in their spare time. It's a great way to express yourself and learn more about the artistic, reflexive, and ruminative sides of photography. I learned a lot about myself and the methodology of photography in the process. If I have time, I will finish the last two sins: Inconstancy and Foolishness, but I think they bleed into the rest of the vices in the theatrical and carnivalesque ways in which I performed.
>>4486478That's too descriptive, please keep feedback general statements only like good or bad
>>4486428I like the idea of a polyptych. Concept is good. This is better than any photo individually which is to say if your photos were better, the final product would be better.>>4486430Missed focus. Bible could tell more of a story than you handling it after applying face paint. Composition is pretty poor. It's like a collage.>>4486431The gold face paint and movement is good. The cards should either be scattered at random or placed like they're being played. As it is, it doesn't look like anything. Let's see the back of some cards, too. The placement of the cross doesn't suggest anything. Is there any reason you wrote on the paper digitally after taking the photo? Why yellow? Use a higher contrast color and write it physically.>>4486432I like the dirty knife but it shouldn't obviously be a kitchen knife. Your wrath is neutered by the three inch blade. Your empty hand should either have something in it too, or not so close to the camera. Make the knife hand complement more. Your cross is the same color as your teeth. It needs more distinction. The suit is a nice touch. Maybe bloody it? Dirty it?>>4486433Lower the f stop. The vulgar still life on the table should be in focus. "Picasso is dead" kindof works here. It would have more impact if there wasn't something else to read. I would actually paint something crass on the canvas, like a dead body or something. Think John Wayne Gacy. Then paint words only on the palette for a stronger effect. The mirror is actually pretty good on the table. I would perhaps raise the camera up to look downwards more at the table and the mirror. Don't block it. Additionally, it should reflect the most impactful item on the table. Probably the nastiest seafood you can find. Additionally, spray some glycerol or something on the seafood to make it sweaty, greasy, etc.>>4486434Overexposed, hard to understand your concept. DESU I like your skin for this series. Let's see your ass or something.Good luck.
>>4486489>>4486433Sorry, I meant raise the f stop value. Greater depth of field.
>>4486489>lets see your ass
>>4486428I'm sorry bro but these are absolutely awful. >he lighting is no doubt just a standard overhead bedroom light>the color grading is no doubt just straight out of camera on standardAnd as for the subject matter and poses/facial expressions, this is like something I would see from a first year photography student when I was in highschool. I think you perfectly captured "baby's first edgy photography project" but that probably wasn't your intention.
So is everyone using Lightroom or what? I already have Affinity 2 and would like something with a permanent license for library as well.

Does anyone here freelance? Any tips to make it a stable source of income (even just side income?)I have done photography freelance on and off but I cannot seem to find clients who reliably want photography. Just connections and odd jobs here and there. Any tips for finding good clients who reliably want stuff done?
>>4486251This anon, this
Another thing to try would be local bands/music events. If you're actually interested in a local music scene, you don't even need connections at the start - just go to concerts, take photos, be the guy with the camera. If you get any good ones, send them over to the band/organizer, they'll want something to put on their social media, and if you snapped something better than what their friend with a phone did for them, they'll be happy to post it, tag your page.Once you have some sort of portfolio/connections/reputation, bands need photos somewhat regularly. They need some sort of "press kit" for their social media, for event posters, etc. That needs to be updated when lineups change, when they record something, or just to refresh every 1-2 years or so. And they might want photography/videography once in a while at their events to have something to put up on their social media.t. not a photography freelancer, but I do music at a semi-pro level, so I've seen this from the other side, where we've hired photographers and paid them decent money.I guess this can generalize to any event-based hobby/entertainment, I personally just happen to have experience with music. That said, I'd suggest choosing a thing you personally are interested in and would go to the events even if it's not a paid gig for you. You'll likely need to do some "for your portfolio" photography at first, so best if you're getting value out of just going to the event, and you're interested in what you're photographing.
>>4486226There's a lot of money in doing freelance upskirt photography. Obviously some risks that have to be navigated but the money is there.
>>4486269you'd need to live in big city with overflowing music scene, real good connections and be the best/the top 1%/the only photographer around to actually make any money. I don't live in a shithole yet bands rarely if ever seem to care about marketing photos to the point of actually paying for them. promotional material is rarely needed on level more complex than outdoors photo on brick wall background snap by band girlfriend and commercial live music photography is obsolete and as good as dead with smartphones and social media. i'm still going to grind my shutter on shitty bands in dive bars because I love it (and free entry to all events is nice) but there's very little money here. would be nice to have at least some cash to supplement my dayjob and i might have to train myself in any other genre that's more viable

Has anyone got experience editing their photographs for print? I trialled a few papers and found I like Ilford Smooth Pearl because it's best for a range of global adjustments, even if it's a bit too shiny. If you have printed, how many times did you have to print to get what you wanted? If I want to sell prints, should I just accept this is going to be a big learning curve? So many papers change how the photograph comes out and it's not an exact science. Postproduction is as much an artform as capturing an image with the camera.I'd love to hear what you have worked on and what you learned. I feel a bit in the dark but will probably realise what I want from my prints in the future. Some people can look at a print and immediately what is wrong with it, but my eyes still need some time to adjust while I learn.
go to a shop where the printer will sit with you for a few minutes and go over your pictures, showing you what they look like on their calibrated equipment. when you decide what look you like, bring them the rest of your files and they will edit them for print.
>>4486047I go to the big box store here and order it on the one kind of fujifilm paper they offer in lustre finish (also the only on offer) and it comes out great. There are no real alternatives untill you go to botique printing shops that'll assfuck you for price because the only people who can afford the hobby are normally rich Eastern Suburbs boomers.Anyway,>NRGo lighter on lumainance NR than you'd normally accept for digital. Chroma NR should be basically the same though. Noise is hidden decently by the ink printing compared to digital viewing especially since you can't zoom in. >ExposureUnderexposed sections are exaccerbated (i've tried 5 different shops and this has been constant, ymmv) so you're better off lifting the shadows a fraction more than you'd be happy for digital. The extra noise is hidden rather well by the ink as above.>SharpeningEdit for digital viewing as normal, then do another unsharp mask pass specifically for printing; it should look slightly too crunchy on a screen but the purpose is to overcome the micro-smearing from the ink. This can take some trial and error, as you can absolutely still oversharpen and it'll look like ass.
Why has the world abandoned photo shoots of good looking women?99% of anything I see now is selfies and if its a photoshoot its just to sell clothing or some super generic looking agency testshoot. 10 years ago or whatever the world was full of every good looking girl doing multiple photoshoots just for content. What happened?
>>4481289What’s wrong is you quit looking at photography and got lazy and just looked at social media instead. Social media is worse than tabloid trash, it’s DIY tabloid trash. If all you look at is internet shit bc it’s low effort, being on your fuckin phone, then you will make shit inspired by that shit. If you seek to produce work of a higher caliber, then you must seek out sources of inspiration worthy of publishing. Make the god damned effort to get your ass and your things and get the fuck out of here. But “everyone” I know has told me the future is all internet shit all the time and nothing but internet shit. Only you can choose whether you make that world of shit your entire reality.

A) You should go to this obscure site called INSTAGRAM and take a better look.B) American politics ruined everything. Both the conservatards and leftards hate women, hate their bodies and hate beauty for some weird reason.
>>4481289They got fucking boring after a while. I mean how many pictures of bitches you're not going to fuck can you look at? And for what? At some point these bitches all look the same anyway. You've got 3 or 4 facial types that make it in modeling, and then their makeup gets done 2 or 3 ways and you just get it jammed down your throat 80,000,000 times and eventually you realize you've seen enough, none of it has gotten you any closer to fucking any of them, they're all rich and you're a fucking sad bastard pulling his pud on an office chair. The whole thing is fucking boring. All of this, this whole universe and life in it, boring boring boring. It's like, fuck man. Just... Fuck.
In 2019, after the death of my father, I stumbled upon a former Amish farm in central New York. I spent about 4-5 years there taking pictures. It’s a time of my life marked by instability, illusions, great learning, joy and disappointment. I hope you all enjoy looking. Feel free to let me know what you see. Will take some time to upload everything, most coming from my instagram because my mac is still in USA and I haven’t rescanned all of my negs.
>>4485929one more, nothing special. the amish are very interesting people, even if they’re inbred. during the pandemic they fought the good fight, refusing to mask up because «they don’t have TV»
>>4485914finishing with a self portrait. around 2022, we began to slowly drift apart, as the anarchy of the farm slowly got to me more and more and kyle had to get work. i would still visit often, but was aware that there was more out there for me. around this time my lens and eyes were pointed towards exploring the decay of the surrounding area. family farms wrecked by opioids, decaying businesses all around with empty storefronts. a general malaise infected the valley. so i would cruise around in my car photographing these things instead of the farm.

I've been a photography enthusiast ever since I met my girlfriend of 4~ years. I shoot with her all the time and even have gotten her into and excited about the craft. Her and I regularly go on walks, and a couple nights ago and she said something that kind of shot out of left field. We were contemplating what trail we were going to hike (my neighborhood backs up to a large recreational/forest area with many choices) and we had decided upon one and to end the conversation she says, "And maybe you don't bring the big camera this time?" and we both laughed, with my laughter just coming from confusion and a little bit of shock for such a request. I cannot for the life of me figure out why she asked this. I seldom ever shoot with a tripod when going on casual walks with her and it never gets in the way of us having a good time, I take a few pictures every walk and throw it over my shoulder and keep going. I don't let my hobby ever get in the way of our time together. If anything she's asking to shoot with me more often. That's why for the life of me I can't understand why she asked me to leave the rb67 at home. She loves shooting with me and is always asking questions to learn more about photography and film. I'm really not trying to sperg out about this, I guess im just trying to figure it out from a girl's pov. I can't help but think the reason she asked is purely aesthetic/visual, as if me hauling it around is unattractive or something. Is carrying this camera around on a semi-regular basis that strange or unfashionable? I really don't think its big enough of an issue to explicitly request I don't use it which is why im so confused.
>>4476906>short answerask her fuckshit>long answerbig cameras can be kinda cringe sometimes. idk why but it probably gives her the ick for you to carry this huge, non-nonchalant thing around. get a ricoh grIII and she'll wanna marry you.

It's impossible to figure out these little social things because they're getting filtered through your own thoughts about them. If anyone gives an answer that doesn't agree with your insecurity there's a good chance you'll brush it off as "not seeing the whole picture", "you don't understand" or whatever. It sounds to me like she just made an offhand joke about how you always have the camera with you. I don't think she was seriously asking you to leave it at home. If she was hinting for that by way of a joke just keep bringing it anyway. Women find it difficult to respect men who fold under minor social pressure. She will appreciate you doing what you want to do and having some degree of conviction about that more than she'll care about you bringing a camera.>>4476925This guy is right. If you won't even just ask her directly about this one thing... Jesus, man. Things are going to be bad for you in pretty much every human relationship forever. It doesn't have to be a fight, just say "hey, the other day when you said about leaving my camera at home, is that something you'd actually like or were you just joking around?"

Film photography is better due to low sensitivity in dark areas. No one needs to see what is in dark areas most of the time. Just imagine this photo with unnecessary crap in shadows.
