Oblivion was great when playing it at a time when I had no idea how games worked, the systems were a mystery and it made the game feel much grander than it actually was. After growing an analytical brain and playing it again I started to realize how shallow and broken it all actually is, I came to appreciate the streamlining of Skyrim more as it takes away some of the jank and leaves a more focused game. Sure there comes a point where the QoL becomes too much and you just want some of that whimsical brokenness back but Skyrim struck a fine balance I feel. They can still add a lot of new features to it and bring spellmaking back.
