Broken Arrow is called, the company commander calls 2 Skyraiders loaded with napalm on his own position. Deviation dice roll is very lucky, they manage to miss most of their own units by a fraction of an inch. A warm day in South Vietnam just got a lot hotter for these lucky GIs

I really gotta figure out a better way to do water. These are hideous and I only like them because they're flat and generic enough that I can put them together to form a river, a bay, a beach, etc. Extremely versatile but they look awful and the clear gaps between the sheets trigger the fuck out of me

Anyways thats the last one I promise

Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. And as we enter this happiest and newest of years, remember: 2e was never an old-school game, bait is for reporting, and fish is for smoking! Happy new year, grogs!

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

I'm inspired by Jaquays' work, especially Borshak's Lair and the top level of Thracia. I love her style so much! This is at a 10ft scale, so there are some huge rooms. I'm probably gonna make the rooms on the right side smaller, as those are kobold bases.
>>
>>97334181
sounds like its time to railroad them tbdesu
>>
>>97334219
Bad advice, players need time to grow into their agency.
>>
>>97334268
yes, but by putting them into the thick of a bigger situation, a DM can force action or punish inaction.

It doesnt have to be over the top or harsh, but show them that they need to self-invest.
>>
>>97333776
Just give them 3 options to do in town and if they're not doing any of those move onto the dungeon.
I've been using the Heat score from Scarlet Heroes for years at this point and it works well for adding occasional urban adventure that isn't the mainstay. Tends to come up frequently enough its a factor and the players think about it but not so often it becomes the whole game.

Noble, or reasonably well off humans yes as they can be ransomed. Commoners should be executed or just let go they are worthless.

Exterminate all orcs on the other hand
>>
>>97314091
Well they are killing everyone else in a whole village in this scene.
>>
>>97294582
It depends on which enemy. If it's one of those
>I'm committed heinous things against you, I've just threatened to kill your little dog, I've explicitly refused surrender before, but now we've fought, I've lost, and now I surrender, so you have to spare my life
situations, fuck no, we're hanging him. Respectfully and with dignity, but he's gonna die.
>>
>play a character that explicitly hates pirates
>a sailor who was previously marooned and crew all killed by pirates
>party is attacked by pirates
>"Surrender or we'll kill you all!"
>we don't surrender
>pirates lose the fight, when down to a quarter left they surrender
>DM acts like I'm totally crazy and out of the blue when I convince the party to execute them all
dont want to be killed, don't be pirates
>>
>>97294582
being real, they were committing war crimes before the enemy surrendered.

>What is known about the Order of the Bitter Ashes
pretty much what the ashen knight book writes they are the knight order of the collectors that became knights after being thrown out of the middle eat by either the euthanos or true black hand and took the holy grail with them
really like the Path of Chivalry and collecting trinkets
>and what happened to them?
heavily implied that they going to get wiped out by the Knights of the Temple of Solomon because they been allies in the past + they have a prophesy that they are going to meet again and they assume that the knight templars will also remember them foundly as allies, but had major beef with goratrix in france and are soon going to join the newly created order of reason so they are not at all in the mood of entertaining vampires

at least one of their grail knights is however still around in the final nights

The entire unit can have meltabombs for 25 pts. Besides the other things they do you can put a bomb squad in a Rhino and blow even a super-heavy tank into orbit.

>>97334060
Effrit are still very good at that. Though so far each I've used Effrit in 3.0 the opponent got so frustrated with them they send their elite melee unit to deal with the Effrit.
>>
>>97334174
Yeah, I found if they got tied up with a real powerhouse unit they just folded. Hence why I picked on weaker units with them. Also that sounds hilarious to me. Pissing people off with effrit sounds like a blast.
>>
>>97334053
>It's almost as good as Fear2 by itself

it's a 1/16 chance to roll a higher 2nd D6 than the first; in fact it's worse than that (even though the roll itself is technically out of 206 for rolling 3D6) because the rule is worded so ambiguously: "discard the lower roll" means you compare that 3rd D6 to both the dice you would normally roll, which becomes 1/256 (16*16); that you're rolling all 3D6 together doesn't influence that one bit

"if the test is passed, the Controlling Player of a Model with this Special Rule may choose to discard one of the D6 results and have that Dice rolled again" would be better (1/16 natural, but also unnaturally low chance of success if the test actual were passed on a high double), but still significantly worse than "Hydra's Wail (1)" or whatever the stacking rules would otherwise be, largely because (1) is easy to understand and apply and doesn't require screwing around with rerolls that basically don't exist any more, and applies directly to the Characteristic being Checked rather than trying to modify the probability of that Check failing

>>97333893
>They're bad vs termies, the main thing HHG cares about
Anon, their shotguns have Shred. That's good literally only against 2W things. ...eh, they're regular shotguns, really. Shred 6 is basically no shred at all.
>>97334037
>>97334060
Headhunters have daggers as well. I know Effrit have 2W and the Wail, but it's kinda the same thing, no?: Shoot, hope for Breaching, charge with Daggers if convenient.
>>97334053
I would combine Effrit with an assload of Havoc launcher Stun and Seeker's Suppression. Not Panic (Seekers, Flamers, Phosphex) because Wails don't affect Ld, only Cool & Int. I don't think I'll use Pinning (Grav).
Seeing how Sniper rifles merely gain S+1 (S5) from standing still, maybe I could arm a couple of Effrit with them, like they were special weapons. Or should I ditch the shotguns for snipers? It's so expensive!!
>>
>>97334263
What happens when you roll a 6 does not define the main role of a unit. Shred is more of a neat bonus that can sometimes come in clutch, but that's it.
Effrit have 2 attacks, headhunters only have 1 attack. Honestly all power daggers are on headhunters is a points tax for having cool models, because sadly they're just worse more expensive seekers for the third edition in a row.

Only take a few snipers in an Effrit squad, you want them for the status effect not the damage.

The Nazghuls were the direct inspiration for the "Wraith" type undead coming from the translation of Nazghul as "Ringwraith." The more knightly depictions of them seem to have originated from the Peter Jackson films and likely were inspired by D&D and Videogame Death Knights.

Death Knights as a form of cursed undead paladin are very much a more modern creation that Charles Stross can be credited for and trying to find evidence of them further back is not going to really go anywhere.

Travel log #3 [Boise, Idaho]-[*4/10]
>>>>>Pros
> So long as you're in the East of town it's easy to get out of civilization
> Pretty enough nights even if the light pollution still gets me
> Almost no kindred in this neck of the woods, easy enough to set up shop with the only authority, the 'Baron of the Garden'
>>>>>Cons
> Still nominally in Loup territory and the way they built most of the town makes me almost cheer them on
> Pricey and easy to stick out if you aren't the 'common clay of the land'
> Why is this place a colony of Deseret with all the fucking Mormons?

Some people could make something out of towns like this, but I certainly couldn't. Which mercifully I don't have to. I get to piss off back to Rocky Mountain roads. Outside of an encounter with a dirty cop (who made the mistake of side-eyeing the Cat) and an incident with a toddler at a gas station, not as much trouble as I was led to believe. How badly does a child have to be educated if they've never seen red hair before?

5e but "better" (latin for worse). At best you're going to get the average 5e experience you would with those people, at worse you're going to get bored.

I would like to talk about the Chronicles of Darkness game line Deviant: The Renegades, or more specifically, one major upcoming supplement. Deviant was released in late 2021, and has had three additional sourcebooks since then. A new supplement, Black Vans, has been in playtesting for a while, and is currently being previewed.

I am not being paid or sponsored to promote this book in any way. I am just very fascinated by it, and indeed, I already ran a mini-campaign using the playtest material.

Deviant is, by default, a game about playing angsty, scarred superheroes who either fight world-manipulating conspiracies or work for them. Black Vans is a toolkit full of variant rules, quick NPC creation, variant character types, and variant genres. These variants range from the minor to the dramatic, completely overhauling what were once non-negotiable, foundational themes and mechanics. Maybe your character is not angsty or scarred at all, perhaps they are a """""regular human""""" like John Wick or Batman, or the campaign might have nothing to do with world-manipulating conspiracies.

These variant genres include cyberpunk, high fantasy, post-apocalypse, space opera, and superhero emergence.

This is a beefy supplement. For example, one chapter alone dedicates 38,000+ words to playing other monsters of the Chronicles of Darkness: Beasts, changelings, demons, Sin-Eaters, hunters (entirely separate from the variant rules for """natural""" superpowers), mages, mummies, Prometheans, vampires, and werewolves. No additional supplements beyond Deviant are necessary; the rules are self-contained, allowing the group to play a monster mash of an urban fantasy setting without needing a daunting 7+ books. And yes, they are supposed to be balanced against one another, so a vampire in the same group as a full-fledged mage is probably some older Kindred.

(Continued.)

what's combat like in storyteller? how fast is it? my only experience i 5e
>>
>>97324576

Chronicles of Darkness combat is what it is. By default, it is gritty and lethal, but this can vary significantly based on the precise power levels and supernatural abilities of everyone involved.

Combat between low-powered schlubs, where nobody gets to apply Defense against firearms, is very different from combat between high-powered heroes who do get to apply Defense against firearms.
>>
I am currently adapting the shades from Mummy: The Curse 2e to a Black Vans space opera setting. I am stripping away references to Sekhem and Duat and making them broader in concept. My basic idea:

>The tenebrae dwell in the interstellar medium. Outside of it, reality forces them into a unique Twilight frequency. The tenebrae are creatures of darkness who loathe light, and yet, they are deeply curious about corporeal sophonts and their societies. Tenebrae happily hop onto FTL ships mid-journey, then disembark to explore sapient-populated worlds, keeping to the shadows and the night. While they are eager to help out sophonts if asked nicely, people must be mindful that tenebrae have discovered a great taste for blood; it is something that does not exist out in the interstellar medium. They are thrilled to be around spilled blood, and to gorge upon it.

They probably feed on Acclimation rather than Sekhem, too.

Any recommendations here? So far it’s been my best win rate of the season, it’s not as aggressive as other mono B decks in standard but I can pretty consistently control early game until they gas out and I finish them off with demons or annexes/talents. It doesn’t have too many natural predators, but artifact and hard control are tough matchups, not much to be done there. I don’t know if I even need cover-up. Cerebral Confiscation also seems like a weak link, but it’s come in clutch a few times.

You could try adding something cheap to put on a bit of pressue to make youa bit more midrange. le blackman of many damage here is a good choice. 2 drop, 4 damage puts some pressure on players. To kill it basically requires a 2 for 1 from them. Hard control really doesnt want to just eat 4 damage a turn and killing it isnt card effective for them.

The PCs must restore the power of the four crystals to defeat the Dark Lord. What should I base the four crystals upon, instead of the four elements?
