The other day I was playing pictel and upon seeing this level I came to the same conclusion as OP.Modern 2D games just don't put effort into the pixel art, it all looks overstylized, overanimated, but hardly any tasteful art or genuine effort, it all seems insincere, like "lol look I maek goofy retro pixel indie gaems xddd", or "serious", stoic games that look like Flash shit.The only modern 2D game I consider to have effort put into it was Cuphead, but that's an anomaly and also 100% hand drawn stuff, not pixel art.

So this game got translated this month. Some claim it's one of the best survival horror games ever and arguably the best Japanese PS2 game to never get translated.
